God’s Creation in Our Hands

Welcome to the weekly CVA blog!  In it you will find famous quotes, news and commentaries.

1. Fish Disappearing from Southeast Asian Oceans

2. Famous quote Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869 – 1948), major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian independence movement. Gandhi practiced and advocated non-violence and truth, even in the most extreme situations. Believed in peaceful civil disobedience.

3. Paying Farmers to Protect the Environment

4. Bible verse Colossians 3:17

5. Bigeye Tuna Numbers Close to Collapse

6. Humanity’s Survival at Risk

1. Fish Disappearing from Southeast Asian Oceans:  Due to the increasing expansion of the fish industry in Southeast Asia, the reduction of number of fish is alarming. In Thailand for example, the density of fish had declined by 86 percent from 1961 to 1991, while between 1966 and 1994 the catch per hour in the Gulf by trawlers fell more than sevenfold. This trend is likely to deplete fish stocks and endanger the livelihood of 100 million people.

As long as this trend continues, the fishing industry is depleting the oceans from its fauna, causing irreparable and tremendous environmental consequences that generations to come are going to face. Adopting a plant-based diet helps restore the health of the environment, and therefore honors God's Creation.

2. There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.”
~ Mohandas K. Gandhi

3. Paying Farmers to Protect the Environment:  The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said that paying for "environmental services" could be an important and effective way to protect and restore the environment. According to FAO’s Director-General Jacques Diouf, "(Farming) has the potential to degrade the Earth's land, water, atmosphere and biological resources -- or to enhance them -- depending on the decisions made by the more than 2 billion people whose livelihoods depend directly on crops, livestock, fisheries or forests."

Offering incentives to farmers to take care of the environment can be a very effective way to help take care of God's Creation, as long as humanity realizes that the transition to a plant-based has much impact in protecting and restoring it.

4. (RSV) Colossians 3:17
"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

Everything we do should be an act of worship to God. Our actions and thoughts need to reflect God's love in us for all Creation.

5. Bigeye Tuna Numbers Close to Collapse:  The Bigeye tuna seems destined to become yet another endangered tuna species, since overfishing and poor regulations are bringing numbers down rapidly. Bigeye tuna is highly prized in Japanese sashimi markets and because up to 60% of the Bigeye tuna catch in the Eastern Pacific are small, juvenile fish, before they reach adulthood and breed, the sustainability of tuna stocks is compromised. Moreover, Bigeye tuna are increasingly being taken as bycatch while fishing for Skipjack and Yellowfin tuna.

Once again we see the devastating effects of exploiting God's animals. Consumer demand for the flesh and byproducts of God's animals is causing misery to Creation, especially to the future generations that will have to deal with our disobedience to God and our poor stewardship of the Earth’s resources. The transition to a plant-based diet is a God-honoring way to show compassion, mercy and love to all creatures.

6. Humanity’s Survival at Risk:  A study involving 1,400 scientists has concluded that at the rate humanity is using Earth's resources our very survival is at risk. According to the United Nations Environment Program, the “point of no return” is fast approaching. Each person in the world now requires a third more land to supply his/her needs than the Earth can supply; and already 30% of amphibians, 23%of mammals and 12% of birds are under threat of extinction. To make things worse, 1 out 10 of the world’s major rivers runs dry every year before it reaches the sea.

One way to reduce dramatically the use of precious resources, such as water, land and fossil fuels is to adopt a plant-based diet. Raising animals for food is terribly inefficient and also contaminates the Earth and causes tremendous suffering to billions of God's animals every year.
