Firefighter Foam Used to Kill Poultry

Last month, 15,000 turkeys in West Virginia thought to be infected with the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, H5N2, were exterminated with firefighting foam.  Poultry scientist, Dr. Ian Duncan, of the University of Guelph, in Ontario, called the foam “a horribly inhumane way to kill birds".  The foam is intended to obstruct birds’ upper respiratory tract including the trachea, and should result in the death of 95 percent of the birds within seven minutes, and 100 percent of the flock within 15 minutes of submergence.

Calling a slow, painful, and terrifying death “humane” shows no respect for God’s animals, and certainly it doesn’t reflect God’s love toward all creatures. Turkeys already live a miserable life under extreme confined and stressful conditions, and are not even spared a horrible death. We should all consider that God’s animals also feel pain and fear. Showing compassion and love to them reflects our obedience to God in being good stewards of Creation.
