 1. Activist Feedback

I distributed 700 “Joyful, Compassionate Eating” booklets to a receptive Winter Jam crowd in Cleveland, Ohio on February 9. It was a rewarding experience.

Upcoming Activist Opportunities

Leafleting and tabling are effective, enjoyable ways to show our brothers and sisters in Christ that a plant-based diet is good for God’s Creation. When you volunteer for the CVA, the CVA now donates $25/hr. to the veg. or animal protection group of your choice. In particular, the Winter Jam events are outstanding leafleting opportunities, with large, young, receptive audiences. Contact Lorena at [email protected] if you can help.

2. Original Sin, part 27

Last week, I argued that it was impractical for Jesus to end scapegoating by punishing those participating in scapegoating. What other options were available to him?

Another possibility was that Jesus could have preached that scapegoating was wrong and in violation of God’s desires for humanity and the world. Since scapegoating by definition involves attributing excessive guilt to individuals, everyone already knows that, in principle, scapegoating is wrong. However, people generally do not recognize when they are involved in the scapegoating process. Since the conviction of the mob that the accused person is guilty apparently confirms that person’s guilt, those participating in scapegoating believe that punishment of the victim(s) of scapegoating is justified and righteous. They would not recognize that Jesus’ admonition against scapegoating applies to them.

While a general condemnation of scapegoating would have been quite pointless, I think that Jesus did undermine the scapegoating process by elliptical teachings and actions. I will explore some examples next week.
