1. Gift Giving

When considering end-of-year donations, we hope you will support the Christian Vegetarian Association ministry, which among other things supports leafleting at Christian events such as Winter Jam (see below).

We also endorse the Educated Choices Program, which uses effective, impactful Internet videos to encourage young people to adopt a plant-based diet. Video topics include animal welfare, health, and environmental protectionism. Young people are often open to new ideas, and a young person who adopts a plant-based diet can, over their lifetimes, spare many animals from the cruelties of modern animal agribusiness. Check out www.ecprogram.org to learn about ECP's important work.

2. Stories and Truth

Assessing the truthfulness of stories has always been difficult. Storytellers often have a goal or agenda, and even those who try to relate an event faithfully must decide which details to include. Their judgments about what matters are shaped by their understanding of the story and by their own biases. Consequently, a work of fiction can sometimes be more truthful than nonfiction, because it makes no claim to historical accuracy.

Many Christians struggle to believe that every biblical story is literally true, including accounts of Jesus' miracles. Whether or not these events occurred as described, they convey important truths about our faith: that Jesus was special, that we should follow his teachings, and that those marginalized by society because of illness or low status deserve our compassion and care.

Jesus warned, "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits… Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven" (Matthew 7:15-16, 21). Today we face a proliferation of bots impersonating people and AI-generated images and videos. It has become increasingly hard to distinguish truth from falsehood, making it more difficult to act righteously in daily life and make wise decisions about public policy.

One effective way to navigate this challenge is to rely on simple, steady principles: to be kind, compassionate, and respectful in all our decisions, and to follow the Golden Rule. As for other principles, such as purity or honor, I will consider those next.

Stephen R. Kaufman, M.D.
