1. Fair Play

I would like to explore the notion of "fair play," which for decades has been the watchword of the high school from which I graduated many years ago.

We should adopt a broader understanding of play than the common idea of mere diversion. When children play, they do so with great seriousness. Although they often enjoy it, their imaginary games and competitions are meaningful to them and are not simply ways to pass the time. Likewise, the "games" in which adults engage—interpersonal interactions, financial exchanges, sports, and other competitions—matter deeply. Indeed, game theory does not concern trivial amusements but rather how people seek to advance their interests when interacting with others who have competing aims.

From this perspective, life resembles a playing field with many overlapping games involving many participants. The temptation to cheat for advantage is real, yet cheating can undermine the game for everyone, including the cheater. I will explore this further.
