1. Jesus - He Didn't Walk Away
I have been reflecting on Ursula LeGuin's short story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, in which some people leave a prosperous town rather than countenance the abuse of a child. I would suggest that Jesus faced a similar choice, yet he did not walk away.
Unlike Omelas, Judea in Jesus' time was marked by widespread poverty and suffering. Nevertheless, hardship was nearly universal in the ancient world, and the people of Judea did enjoy a measure of peace and protection under Roman rule, provided they paid tribute to Rome.
Jesus could have chosen a monastic life with minimal interaction with society at large. Such a path would have distanced him from the pervasive injustices perpetrated by those in power against the weak and vulnerable. Yet choosing to live quietly within such a society risked offering tacit or even explicit support for its unjust customs and laws.
Jesus neither walked away nor ignored injustice. John the Baptist, identifying Jesus' mission, declared that he was "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). In the next essay, I will explore what is meant by "the sin of the world" and then I will consider the meaning of "the Lamb of God."
