Leafleting and tabling are effective, enjoyable ways to show our brothers and sisters in Christ that a plant-based diet is good for God’s Creation. When you volunteer for the CVA, the CVA now donates $16/hr. for tabling and $25/hr. for up to 3 hours for leafleting to the veg. or animal protection group of your choice. In particular, the Winter Jam events are outstanding leafleting opportunities, with large, young, receptive audiences. Contact Lorena at lorenavalenziveg@gmail.com if you can help.
2. Original Sin, part 31
Continuing the discussion of Jesus’ teachings against the scapegoating process, consider Jesus’ declaration to the Pharisees and lawyers:
Woe to you! for you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. So you are witnesses and consent to the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their tombs. Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel [Genesis 4:10] to the blood of Zechariah [2 Chronicles 24:21-22], who perished between the altar and the sanctuary (Luke 11:47-51).
The prophets condemned killing innocent victims, and many prophets, for articulating that message, were killed themselves. Jesus denounced the Pharisees and lawyers for building tombs and celebrating the prophets’ greatness, which made it easier for the Pharisees and lawyers to ignore the prophets’ actual, challenging message.
Jesus said that the blood of all the prophets was required of this generation. I think he meant that the mindset of “this generation” was the same as that of every other generation, and therefore all generations have been guilty of murders. Each generation can condemn past murders, but it is unwilling to confront its own violence and scapegoating. Therefore many people have ridiculed or denounced those animal advocates who have exposed injustice toward nonhumans. This illustrates the challenge of having a prophetic voice, to which I will consider next week.
