Exploiting Poultry Has A Human Cost
1. Tough
Penalties for Processing Downer Cows:
Yesterday, a team of
senators introduced legislation to impose tougher penalties, including
the permanent closure, for companies that process downer cattle. The
legislation states fines for first-time offenders, a one-year suspension
in operations for second-time offenders, and finally third-time
offenders would be shut down permanently. Senator Feinstein said,
"Companies responsible for this kind of activity shouldn't just receive
a slap on the wrist,"... "The safety of our food supply cannot be taken
lightly."

Tougher laws
are indeed needed for companies or individuals who cause harm to any
creature, human or animal. While the health of consumers is certainly
very important, it's still appalling that the issue of animal cruelty is
still very much a low priority, or not even in the radar, of
legislators.

butcher relenteth not at the bleating of the lamb; neither is the heart
of the cruel moved with distress. But the tears of the compassionate are
sweeter than dew-drops, falling from roses on the bosom of spring."

260-pound baseball player and the youngest player to hit 50 home runs in
a season, is powered by wheatgrass, soy and tofu. Prince, who learned
how animals are treated and slaughtered for food, decided to go
vegetarian and stop supporting the meat industry and therefore adopted a
well-balanced plant-based diet.

4. (RSV)
Galatians 5:22-23
"But the
fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law."
We are made in
the image of God's love and we know our lifestyle accords with our Faith
when we show love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and self-control toward all Creation.

Exploiting Poultry Has A Human Cost:
Poultry farms make profit at
the expense of animals and humans. A recent investigation by the
Charlotte Observer revealed that the poultry industry has masked the
extend of injury that workers are likely to suffer by not reporting
them. The most common being: carpal tunnel syndrome, bringing injured
employees back to the factory hours after surgery, failing to record
injuries on government safety logs, dismissal of workers' requests to
see a doctor, etc.

Humanity has to
realize that they are consequences for all Creation, including us, when
we exploit God's animals. We like to think of ourselves as immune to the
wrongs we are causing, but sooner or later, we pay the consequences.
