Healthful Eating

1. Healthcare Deceit
2. Famous Quote – Carl Lewis
3. Vegan Hockey Athlete
4. Bible verse – 1 Peter 1:24-25
5. Eating Beef is a Gamble
6. This Week’s Video – Larry King Live

1. Healthcare Deceit

Michael Pollan, author of several books including "In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto" and "The Omnivore's Dilemma", writes a compelling article about the wrong angle on healthcare. The availability of cheap food, largely meat-based, is making Americans overweight and causing many chronic diseases, such as diabetes. As Pollan states, "the government is putting itself in the uncomfortable position of subsidizing both the costs of treating Type 2 diabetes and the consumption of high-fructose corn syrup" instead on focusing on disease prevention. 2. Famous Quote

“I’ve found that a person does not need protein from meat to be a successful athlete.” ~ Carl Lewis, winner of 10 Olympic medals, 9 gold

3. Vegan Hockey Athlete

Montreal Canadiens forward Georges Laraque, perhaps the most feared pugilist in the National Hockey League, became a strict vegetarian after watching Earthlings, a 2006 documentary about animal exploitation. Although his health benefited from the change, he believes that “It’s unconscionable what’s happening to animals in this country and the way we treat animals we eat. … I realized I had to make some big changes.” To read the full article please search online for Laraque happy to veg out

What a great example it is that an outstanding athlete chooses a compassionate and healthy diet that not only benefits himself but the rest of God’s Creation.

4.  Bible Verse

(RSV) 1 Peter 1:24-25

...for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord abides for ever." That word is the good news which was preached to you.

Although power and glory on Earth are tempting, we should strive to live a fulfilling life in obedience to God's eternal Word, Christ's teachings of compassion, mercy and love.

5. Eating Beef is a Gamble

Stephanie Smith, a children’s dance instructor, ended up paralyzed after a sever infection due to E. Coli in a hamburger she'd eaten. Ground beef is usually not simply a chunk of meat run through a grinder. Instead, a single portion of hamburger meat is often a mix of various grades of meat from different parts of cows and even from different slaughterhouses, which makes it particularly vulnerable to E. coli contamination. In spite of this, there is no federal requirement for grinders to test their ingredients for the pathogen. Eating beef is indeed a gamble. To read the full article please search online for E. Coli path shows flaws in beef inspection

Factory farmed animals live in such confinement and filth that it's inevitable that they carry many diseases, sometimes even fatal to humans. Meat processing is largely un-inspected and unsanitary. The most effective way to avoid food-related diseases is to transition to a plant-based diet, honoring to God and to all of Creation.

6. This Week’s Video

Due to ground beef contamination with E. coli bacteria that has sickened countless of people in the US, on Monday night's "Larry King Live," a wide range of guests joined an in-depth and spirited debate to answer this question: Should meat, and most specifically hamburgers, be a part of the American diet?
